Training
Courses 2001
Apex
on DNA microarrays: applications in SNP analysis, mutation
detection and DNA resequencing
Training
course organisers:
Andres Metspalu, Ph.D., M.D.; Head of Department of Biotechnology,
University of Tartu, Estonia (chair of the committee)
Ants Kurg, Ph.D.; Docent Department of Biotechnology, University
of Tartu, Estonia
Maris Väli, Project Manager, Estonian Biocentre, Estonia.
This
will be a practical, hands-on training course on genotyping
arrays using glass slides as the support medium. The course
will be followed by a lecture course on the theoretical aspects
of SNP-based genotyping and LD calculation and other technical
platforms of genotyping (MS, ASO, minisequencing, microbeads
etc.)

Curation
of Databases in Molecular Biology
Training
course organisers:
Dr Arthur Lesk, Department of Haematology, University of Cambridge
Clinical School, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Dr Jean Garnier, Unite' d'Ingenierie des Proteines, Biotechnologies,
INRA, Jouy en Josas, France
Dr Manuela Helmer-Citterich, Dipartimento di Biologia, Universita`
di Roma, Tor Vergata, Roma, Italy
Two
factors dominate current developments in bioinformatics: (1)
The increasing amount of raw data and (2) the successful application
of these data to research via curated databanks, but annotation
is a weak component of the enterprise. A course, to be attended
by advanced students preparing for a career in bioinformatics
could set standards for annotators and for the development
of methods whereby the community can be involved in curation
of databanks. Participation by members of staff of archival
databanks and major users of databanks would also be welcomed.
The format of the course will primarily be lectures and discussions.
