Training Courses 2003

Hot topics in structural genomics

Training course organiser:
Rita Casadio; Dept of Biology, University of Bologna, Italy.

The training course will provide a unique forum both for experts and young researchers to meet and fruitfully debate the most recent achievements in the field of protein structure prediction. Furthermore a specific goal of this training course is to open a discussion on the methods that are presently available for the prediction of protein structures, their accuracy and limits with the purpose of stirring new ideas and prompting new developments, both theoretically and practically. This will highlight the role of predictive methods in structural genomics and particularly on computational proteomics, with benefits for the all-scientific community involved in studies of functional genomics and proteomics.

New Developments in Genomics for Biomedicine

(lecture course)

Training course organisers:
Franc Gubensek; Dept. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, J. Stefan Institute, Slovenia.
Peter Dovc; Zootechnical Department, University of Ljubljana
Radovan Komel; Institute of Biochemistry, University of Ljubljana
Damjana Rozman; Institute of Biochemistry, University of Ljubljana
Borut Strukelj; Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana
Boris Turk; Dept. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, J. Stefan Institute
Maja Ravnikar; Laboratory for Plant Physiolgy, National Institute of Biology

The Lecture Course will be devoted to the broad area of genomic research and will cover studies of human, animal and plant genomes. It is designed to present current progress and it is timely to offer an opportunity to young scientists and other participants to discuss their problems with leading European scientists and to be acquainted by them with new developments in the different fields of genomics. There will be a lot of time to foster discussion and collaboration where appropriate with colleagues working in related research fields and using similar approaches.

Biocrystallography: From gene to drug

(lecture course)

Training course organisers:
Silvano Geremia; Dept of Chemistry at the University of Trieste, Italy.
Cynthia Ebert; Dept of Organic Chemistry at the University of Trieste, Italy.
Gianluca Tell, School of Medicine, Trieste University, Italy.

The four day course will focus on issues related to

  • protein expression (1 day)
  • X-ray structure determination (2 days)
  • in silico analysis (1 day)

Protein crystallography is a highly interdisciplinary field where the ideal biocrystallographer should be familiar with molecular biology and protein biochemistry as well as biophysics, structural biology and computational methods.
This training course will try to connect these methodologies in such a way to cover the main experimental procedures essential to follow the process of gene product characterization through its three-dimensional atomic structure.
