Compartmentalized signalling by kinases and phosphatases
14th PROTEIN KINASE SYMPOSIUM

Organisation:

Organizer: Kjetil Taskén (for Thematic Research Area for Cell Signaling, Medicine and Health Group on Signal Transduction and The Biotechnology Centre, University of Oslo)
Organizing Committee: John Scott, Alexandra Newton, Miles Houslay, Kjetil Taskén, Cathrine R. Carlson
Scientific Committee: Stein O. Døskeland, Tore Jahnsen, Johan Lund, John Scott, Kjetil Taskén, Ulrich Walter

Objectives:

The focus of this proposal for an ESF workshop is to gather European scientists in the area to show excellent examples of the use of genome-wide approaches and state-of-the-art functional genomics techniques in the cell signaling field and promote a more wide-spread use of functional genomics approaches. Furthermore, the aim is to promote understanding of the functional significance of intracellular signalling and in particular the emerging principles of anchored and localized signalling in the cell.
The specific objectives of organizing this workshop are
1) To arrange a small but excellent international symposium in the field of signal transduction with focus on protein phosphorylation
and kinases
2) Contribute to scientific interaction and update of European researchers in this area
3) Educate Ph.D. students and Post Docs that will have the opportunity to meet internationally well recognized researchers in the area and also to present their own data
4) Promote and increase networking and concerted action in this research field in Europe.

History and Background:

Protein Kinase Symposia have developed into one of the most important meetings in cellular signaling and protein phosphorylation in Europe and is the most important international forum in the cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP signaling field. From the start in 1987, this was a smaller meeting with local and European participation and the intention was primarily to establish networks and collaboration. Over the years this meeting has gained momentum and reached a more international format and has been subject to considerable interest in the scientific environment both in Europe and in the US. From 1995 the meeting has been announced in international fora with 17 lecturers and 60 participants in 1995, 22 lecturers and 80 participants in 1996. From 1996 a permanent scientific committee was established and the meetings in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 have all been arranged with approximately 30 lecturers and 100-120 participants venue sites in Norway and Germany.

Outline of the event:

The workshop is planned organized over 4 working days from Thursday afternoon to Sunday lunch time. There will be 2-4 daily sessions with 2-3 invited speakers and 2-3 shorter talks of 10-15 minutes selected from registered abstracts. All registered participants will be offered the opportunity to submit abstracts and present posters in a poster session.
