Molecular Interactions: New Frontiers for Computational Methods

Organisers:

Anna Tramontano (Rome) e-mail: anna.tramontano@uniroma1.it
Henriette Molinari (Verona)
Roberto Giacobazzi (Verona)
Alfonso Valencia (Madrid)

Objectives:

The docking field is developing rapidly and it is not easy to keep pace with new methodologies and results. Docking servers and programs are available, even if their number is still limited, but in general they are harder to use than other prediction servers (because of the complexity of the problem) and, more importantly, it is not easy for young researchers to have an idea of the expected performances and the pitfalls of the various methods and approaches.

It is especially difficult to have an overview of the approaches for the prediction of both protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions. Similarly, physical docking and the recently developed sequence-based methods have rarely been discussed together in the same meeting. Participants atthis course will have a unique opportunity to gain an understandng of the differences and similarities of all these approaches.

Sharing information should also foster the development of new combined methods, a possibility that would be very exciting, for both the participants and teachers.

Participation:

The course is directed towards people with some experience in computational techniques and/or in the usage of docking programs. We expect to accept about 24 participants, a number that we consider ideal to ensure the success of the practical part. The participants selected by the Organizing Committee on the basis of a shortCV and a statement about scientific interests. Participants will be encouraged to present a poster that they will discuss during the course and to submit a docking problem as possible topic for the practicals.
