Introduction
We aim to arrange a series of broad scope symposia in combination with intensive training courses (with focus on new technologies), once a year. We will gather PhD students and young researchers and provide them with both an intellectually
stimulating environment and first-rate training.
This initial event includes two concurrent 2-day training courses for a total number of 60 participants (30 participants each) and a 3-day symposium with an estimated total number of participants of 150.
The courses will provide specific training in terms of new technologies. At this point, we have identified the importance of anticipating the shift towards the use of next generation sequencing platforms, as well as the implementation of live cell-and in vivo imaging systems. We will provide researchers, with powerful tools for studying molecular mechanisms underlying disease, with a special focus on metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders, and the role of water balance in disease progression. We will run the two courses in parallel for two days. Thereby, the speakers can address a selected audience with sufficient knowledge in the area to be able to follow an advance level course. In addition to lectures on the basis and applications of these technologies, we have organised site visits and demonstrations. A two-days intensive course at this level is equivalent to 2 credit points for graduate students.
Immediately following the training courses, the symposium sessions broadly address cutting-edge issues and application in the following areas: genomics, bioimaging, “omics” profiling, proteomics, epigenetics, data handling and analysis, intracellular
signalling underlying disease, etiological mechanisms and modern diagnostics.
We have invited leading scientists with strong track record and experience in the use of technological tools for pre-and clinical research as lecturers. The sessions will be focused in concrete examples of the applicability of the techniques in sequencing and bioimaging. In this way, we aim at awakening the interest of the participants in each other’s areas of expertise. We foresee that this approach will promote the establishment and reinforcement of collaborations between participants worldwide.
We will also have presentations from the major European technology platform providers and developers for molecular medicine addressing key European research networks and European research infrastructures. Thereby we will provide participants
not only with know-how but also information on how to readily access and to take full advantage of these available resources. We plan to close the programme with a workshop discussing what common initiatives can be taken to reinforce research in Molecular Medicine in Europe.
An overview of the programme can be downloaded here.
This event will be held in Soria Moria, Norway. This is a conference centre located in the outskirts of Oslo and is easily reached from Gardermoen airport (very well connected internationally), via Oslo Central Station, by either underground (ca. 30 min trip plus a 10 minute walk) or by taxi (ca. 20 min).
