Introduction

The European Congress of Biotechnology is one of the largest and most important platforms for biotechnologists – both from industry and academia - in Europe. Organised every two years since 1978, a major focus is the interdependence of Science, Industry and Society. The four Central Themes of the 14th edition of this Congress; Systems Biology & Technology, Industrial Biotechnology, Health & Medicine and Plant & Environmental Biotechnology will present the state of the art to a broad audience.

Particular emphasis is placed on the participation of Europe’s´ young scientists whose responsibility will be to carry forward the spirit of the role of Science for a cleaner, more efficient Industry to meet the expectations of Society. The Young European Biotech Network (YEBN) will organise its own meeting as a satellite event of the ECB-14 to debate how industry and academia can work more efficiently together.

The Systems Biology & Technology programme has been designed to cover the interests of the ESF Programme of Frontiers of Functional Genomics, ranging from highthroughput emerging technologies to functional genomics and bioinformatics.
Furthermore, other Stream Programmes of the ECB-14 also cover a broad range of disciplines that are closely linked to Systems Biology, such as nanobiotechnology, synthetic biology, omics and optimisation strategies. The international speakers are chosen not only for their eminence in this area but also for their links to the biotech community.
