Introduction

High throughput scientific methods, technologies and reagents are rapidly transforming both basic biological science and biomedicine. To make full use of high throughput approaches, individual research laboratories studying scientifically and/or medically important problems need access to an integrated high throughput facility hosting genome- scale reagent libraries, automated screening equipment and technical expertise. Such a facility has recently been strategically established at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Home to Europe’s most sophisticated, state-of-art, ultra-high-performance liquid
handling and analytical platform, the new facility is an unparalleled resource that provides European researchers access to genome- scale reagents, laboratory automation equipment and expertise and training in the fields of Systems Biology, Functional Genomics, Drug Discovery and Cancer Biology.

To mark the inauguration of the facility, we are hosting an international conference focussing on key high throughput biology research areas to exemplify the capabilities of this center. This two day conference will gather an elite assembly of distinguished European and international high throughput research pioneers and covers prominent high throughput research areas including Functional and Chemical Genomics, Systems Biology of Transcriptional Regulation, Cancer genetics and Proteomics. The High Throughput Biology 2010 conference will be recognised as the premier high throughput science event within the Nordic region during 2010.

The aims of this conference are to:

• Improve awareness amongst the European and international scientific community how high throughput methods can accelerate research in the most rapidly developing fields of biology related to public health
• Highlight the significance, potential, and flexibility of cell-based functional genomics and chemical genetics assays in high throughput format to the Nordic/European biomedical and clinical research community
• Establish a strong European identity and promote the scientific excellence of the facility
• Further develop research initiatives and collaborations with European and international academic and commercial high throughput laboratories
• Generate novel ideas related to the conference presentations that can then be implemented at both a Nordic and pan-European level to increase the impact of European science
