Conferences 2008
3rd ESF Conference on Functional Genomics and Disease
Organisers:
Mike Taussig: Babraham Research Campus, Cambridge, UK
Clemens Sorg: Innsbruck Medical University, Austria
Developments in functional genmocs technologies together with the expanding concept of systems biology have led to exciting possibilities for the understanding of disease mechanisms. Following two highly successful conference in Prague and Oslo, this conference will bring together world leaders in the field to discuss the challenges ahead and the technologies that will lead to novel solutions. Join us and colleagues from all over the world in the beautiful city of Innsbruck in the heart of the Austrian Alps.

ESF-EMBO Symposium on Antiviral Applications of RNA Interference
Organisers:
Jens Kurreck: Free University of Berlin, Germany
Ben Berkhout: University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
RNA interference (RNAi) is a promising new technology, which allows specific inhibition of gene expression. The conference will bring together leading biochemists, molecular biologists, virologists and clinical physicians to discuss the potential of RNAi as an antiviral tool for research and medical purposes. The focus will be on human pathogenic viruses, but new concepts originating from related areas will also be included.

Governing Biobanks - what are the challenges?
Conference organiser:
Jane Kaye: The Ethox Centre, DPHPC, University of Oxford, UK
This conference will bring together some of the leading thinkers on issues of biobanks and governance from across the world. This is a topic that is of growing academic interest, but also is a matter that requires urgent investigation if the current growth of genomic resources is to be maintained. Student bursaries are available to allow young researchers to participate in this international conference.

Integrated Mechanisms of Cellular Identity and Homeostasis ?
Conference organisers:
Anne Corcoran: The Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK
Martin Turner: The Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK
Raghu Padinjat: The Babraham Institute, Cambridge, UK
In the ground-breaking post genomic era of functional genomics, two key areas have taken centre stage: epigenetics and systems biology. The study of DNA methylation, chromatin modifications and other epigenetic mechanisms conferring heritable transcriptional states, hold the key to understanding gene regulation in biology and its application to medicine. In parallel, major advances in areas including transcriptomics and proteomics have necessitated the development of systems biology to integrate the enormous amount of information being generated about the protein products of these genes, with the aim of quantitatively defining the components and interactions of complex cellular signalling pathways. This conference brings together key international leaders in epigenetics and signalling to explore two convergent themes that embrace these topics: Epigenetic mechanisms in development and Cellular responses to the environment. These themes have evolved from our vision of the need for integrative approaches both inside and outside the nucleus, and one of the aims of this meeting is to foster cross-disciplinary approaches to incorporate and exploit the large-scale experimental and computational information being generated in the post-genomic era.

Angiogenesis in Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases
Conference organisers:
Kari Alitalo: Molecular/Cancer Biology Center of Excellence, University of Helsinki, Finland
This meeting focuses on the molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis in cancer and in cardiovascular disease. The field is rapidly moving forward, particularly due to the recent emergence of novel
approaches such as epigenetics, micro-RNAs, and the study of neural guidance molecules in the elucidation of the mechanisms regulating angiogenesis. The meeting aims at providing the attendees a comprehensive state-of-the-art overview of the current advances in the field.
